Bears News: Steve McMichael named Hall of Fame finalist

by - Senior Editor -

Chicago Bears legend Steve "Mongo" McMichael has been named as one of three senior finalists to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2024.

Since 2010, all 21 senior finalists have been inducted into the Hall of Fame, so this should be just a formality for McMichael to be inducted. It will become official this winter before the Super Bowl.

“Every one of the individual presentations for the 12 candidates by the members of the Seniors Committee participating Tuesday was outstanding, truly creating the possibility that each one could have reached the position of Finalist,” Jim Porter, president of the Hall said in the statement. “I applaud the committee for the thorough discussion and consideration for all 12. The depth of the Seniors pool came on full display once again.”

“He would have died at home if it wasn’t for the nomination,” Steve’s wife, Misty McMichael, told the Chicago Sun-Times on Tuesday. “He was dying in front of us. We ripped up the DNR because of the nomination. He has to live to see this.”

McMichael had 95 sacks, 13 forced fumbles, 17 fumble recoveries, three safeties, and 847 combined tackles in his 15 years in the NFL. He was named 4-time All-Pro and two-time Pro Bowl during his career.

“It means everything to us,” said his wife Misty to WGN of her husband being a potential Hall of Famer. “Everybody knows, especially in the NFL world, that he deserves it, that his stats have always been there."

McMichael has been battling ALS since 2021.

“He needs to see himself enshrined in the Hall of Fame. Please pray for him to get through this,” his wife said recently.
