Former Cubs outfielder signs with Royals

by - Senior Editor -

Veteran outfielder Jon Jay was a fan favorite in his short stint with the Cubs in 2017.

The Kansas City Royals announced on Tuesday that Jay had signed a one-year deal with the team. According to multiple reports, the deal is worth $3 million with another $1.5 in possible performance bonuses. MLBtraderumors.com predicted that he would sign a two-year, $14 million contract with Texas. This offseason has certainly, to say the least for some of the veteran players that have signed less than anticipated deals.

The year previously the Cubs signed him to a one-year deal worth $8 million.

In 2017, Jay batted .296 with two homers, 34 RBIs, and had a career-high .374 on-base percentage. He hit .325 as a pinch-hitter coming off the bench.

For his career, he is a .288 hitter with 33 homers and 287 RBIs.

This was a solid value play by the Royals because he is a reliable starter in the outfielder, can come off the bench in pinch-hitting situations, and was a great team member by all accounts by Cubs players.
