ATLANTA – The Chicago Cubs today recalled left-handed pitcher Justin Steele from the South Bend Alternate Site and designated right-handed pitcher Brandon Workman for assignment.

Steele, 25, begins his second stint with Chicago as he was recalled, April 12, and made his major league debut that night in Milwaukee, tossing 1.1 scoreless innings. He made three relief appearances for the Cubs, throwing 3.1 scoreless innings with one walk and four strikeouts, before he was optioned to the alternate site, April 17.

Steele spent the majority of 2020 at the South Bend Alternate Site and was recalled by the Cubs, August 2, but did not appear in a game prior to his option back the alternate site, August 5. He owns a 16-23 minor league record with a 3.62 ERA (129 ER/320.2 IP) in 80 outings, all but five as a starter, pitching as high as the Double-A level in 2018 and 2019.

Originally selected by the Cubs in the fifth round of the 2014 draft out of George County High School in Lucedale, Miss., Steele has averaged nearly a strikeout an inning in his minor league career with 316 strikeouts in 320.2 innings, along with 131 walks.

Workman, 32, is 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA (6 ER/8.0 IP) in 10 relief appearances for the Cubs, walking seven and striking out 11. He signed a one-year major league deal with Chicago in February.
