Cubs Minor League News: Two Bote bombs, Peralta homers, Pannone and Santy impressive, more

by - Senior Writer -

This is the first week that all five in-state affiliations will be in action, so things will be hectic. You have already seen that with a doubleheader earlier in the week, and there will be more to come as another one of the Cubs games has been postponed this week.

Regardless, four games were still taking place, and the fans had plenty of baseball action to watch with the Chicago Cubs off. Overall, it was another tough showing, as the Cubs closed out their evening with a 1-3 record.

COLUMBUS CLIPPERS 6 - IOWA CUBS 4 (F/10)

The Cubs' back-and-forth week continued on Thursday as they fell to the Clippers 6-4. Thomas Pannone made the start, and once again, it was a strong showing. He yielded one run on four hits through six innings, striking out seven. His ERA sits at 2.63 for the season.

The lone run he allowed came in the first off the Jonathan Rodriguez single.

Apart from his outing, things didn't go well as the Cubs bullpen failed to hold a late lead and then let this get away in extras. In what was a bullpen game for Columbus, the Cubs made sure to capitalize early as David Peralta led things off for the Cubs with a solo shot to bring things back to even 1-1.

One inning later, the long ball continued to lead the way for the Cubs as David Bote connected on a solo shot to give Iowa a 2-1 lead.

Coming off his first four-hit game since 2021, Bote remains one of the hotter hitters in the lineup as he added his second homer in as many at-bats to put Iowa up 3-1.

Despite the bullpen struggles most of the night, Iowa managed to hold their 3-1 lead until the eighth when Porter Hodge and Riley Martin pitched into trouble, resulting in a game-tying Daniel Schneemann single that helped force extras. In the extra frame, it was time for Carl Edwards Jr to struggle as the right-hander never had it on the mound.

All the damage off Edwards came on one swing with Jhonkensy Noel connected for a three-run shot, giving the Clippers a 6-3 cushion. Iowa did manage to get one of those runs back in the bottom of the 10th on a Brennen Davis single, but that was it, as they fell to the Clippers 6-4.

TENNESSEE SMOKIES vs CHATTANOOGA LOOKOUTS (PPD)

For the second time this week, the Smokies and Lookouts will play two as they will make up today's game on Friday.

CEDAR RAPIDS KERNELS 8 - SOUTH BEND CUBS 1 (F/5)

Thursday was rough for the Cubs as they fell to the Kernels 8-1 in five innings. Tyler Santana didn't have one of his better days, as he was charged with all eight runs in just 3 2/3. That was more than enough for Andrew Morris who gave Cedar Rapids five innings of one-run, four strikeout ball.

The Kernels wasted no time opening the scoring. RBI singles from Rubel Cespedes and Jay Harry put them in front 2-0, and an RBI groundout made it 3-0. Had they not scored the rest of the way, this would've been enough offense to get it done, but the Kernels' offense had other plans.

Keoni Cavaco extended the lead to 4-0 with a solo shot in the second, while another RBI single off the bat of Augustin Ruiz put the Cubs in a 5-0 hole. The lone run of the game for the Cubs came in the bottom of the third as Yohendrick Pinango delivered the RBI single to make things 5-1. That was as close as things would get as the Cespedes triple made things 7-1 in the fourth before Danny De Andrade closed out the scoring with a double.

AUGUSTA GREENJACKETS 2 - MYRTLE BEACH PELICANS 0 (F/12)

This was about as tough of a loss as you can have if you are a fan of the Pelicans, as they fell to the Greenjackets 2-0 in 12 innings. This was about as good of a pitching matchup as you could imagine, as this was a scoreless game through 11 innings.

Marino Santy got the start for the Birds, delivering a season-high five innings and allowing just three hits with nine strikeouts.

He gave way to a plethora of arms, including Kenyi Perez, who struck out seven in three scoreless frames. The Pelicans staff may have walked 11, but they also struck out 23 Greenjacket hitters.

Augusta was equally as good on the mound, with their starter Mitch Ferris striking out six in five innings before Davis Polo came on to pitch the next six, also striking out six. The game's only runs came in the top of the 12th as the Pier-Oliver Boucher single drove home both runs.

ACL CUBS 8 - ACL DODGERS 1

The ACL Cubs couldn't have asked for a better start to the year as they ran their record to 3-0 after a massive win. Pitching was the name of the game for the Cubs, as they allowed just three hits in the win. Luis Martinez-Gomez got the ball for the Cubs, and despite walking four times compared to two strikeouts, he kept the Dodgers offense in check as he allowed one run in four innings before handing things over to the pen.

After a scoreless first inning, the Cubs offense came to life in the second as they pushed across three runs. The first of those runs came home on a wild pitch while the Eriandys Ramon double and Angel Cepeda single pushed the lead to 3-0. The Cubs offense was just getting started as Geuri Lubo added an RBI single in the third to push the lead to 5-0.

The lone Dodgers run came in the top half of the fourth as the Angel Diaz single pulled the Dodgers to within 5-1. The Cubs added on in the bottom of the fourth with one run coming home on the Cepada triple before a sacrifice fly made things 7-1. Ismael Mena picked up that sacrifice fly and then closed the scoring with an additional RBI single in the sixth.

Mena and Cepada led the way offensively for the Cubs as they collected two hits and two RBIs.
