Angels trade for former Cubs outfielder Jorge Soler

ANAHEIM – The Angels today acquired OF/DH Jorge Soler from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for RHP Griffin Canning.

Soler, 32, played in 142 games for San Francisco and Atlanta in 2024 and recorded 34 doubles, 21 home runs, 84 runs scored, 64 RBI and a .780 OPS. Among outfielders, Soler ranked fourth in doubles (34) and 10th in walks (68) in 2024.

A native of La Habana, Cuba, Soler was signed as an international free agent by Chicago (N.L.) on June 30, 2012 and made his Major League debut with the Cubs in 2014. Soler is a two-time World Series Champion (2016 Cubs and 2021 Braves), and was named World Series MVP in 2021 after batting .300 with three home runs for Atlanta in the Fall Classic. Soler set a Kansas City record and led the American League with 48 home runs in 2019, and was named a National League All-Star with the Marlins in 2023. For his career, he has compiled 197 doubles, 191 home runs, 516 RBI and 500 runs scored across 1,012 games in 11 Major League seasons.

Canning, 28, played five seasons for the Angels, finishing 25-34 with a 4.78 ERA (508 IP – 270 ER) with 483 strikeouts in 99 games (94 starts). In 2024, he appeared in 32 games (31 starts) and compiled a 6-13 record and a 5.19 ERA (171.2 IP – 99 ER) with 130 strikeouts.
