Chicago Cubs cut 11 players from spring roster |
Some roster news today for the Northsiders.
The Chicago Cubs announced 11 cuts from spring training on Friday to put the total from 62 to 51 players on the roster. Robel Garcia and Tyson Miller were optioned to Triple-A Iowa and pitchers Justin Steele and Manuel Rodriguez were optioned to Double-A Tennessee. None of these are surprises as Garcia needs to work on his contact rate and his defense while the other three are depth pieces that have loads of potential. Seven non-roster players were assigned to minors with Jason Adam, Oscar De La Cruz, Caleb Simpson and Brock Stewart; left-handed pitchers Tyler Olson and C.D. Pelham; and catcher Jhonny Pereda. 27 out of the 51 players left on the spring training roster are currently pitchers. There are also five catchers, 12 infielders, and seven outfielders, including 13 non-roster invitees still battling for a few spots. The number will eventually be dwindled down to only 26 spots by Opening Day.
