Roster Moves: Cubs place Willson Contreras on IL, call up catcher |
ST. LOUIS – The Chicago Cubs today placed catcher Willson Contreras on the 10-day injured list with right hip inflammation and selected catcher Tyler Payne from Triple-A Iowa. To make room on the 40-man roster for Payne, outfielder Alfonso Rivas has been transferred to the 60-day injured list.
Payne will wear uniform number 96 and is available for today’s 2:15 p.m. CT season finale against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium. Payne, 28, was selected by Chicago in the 30th round of the 2015 draft out of West Virginia State University. In six minor league seasons, the right-handed hitter has batted .244 (244-for-1,000) with 54 doubles, five triples, 23 home runs and 139 RBI in 287 games. Payne was named a 2019 Carolina League mid-season All-Star with Single-A Myrtle Beach. This season primarily with Double-A Tennessee, Payne has hit .231 (49-for-212) with 14 doubles, one triple, four home runs and 30 RBI in 59 games. Contreras, 29, is batting .237 (98-for-413) with 20 doubles, 21 home runs and 57 RBI in 128 games for Chicago this season. Rivas, 25, hit .318 (14-for-44) with a double, a home run and three RBI in 18 games for the Cubs before he was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right middle finger tendon injury, September 20.
