It's official: Cubs trade outfield prospect for standout reliever, DFA Patrick Wisdom

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today acquired right-handed pitcher Eli Morgan from the Cleveland Guardians for outfielder Alfonsin Rosario. In a corresponding move, infielder Patrick Wisdom has been designated for assignment. The Cubs 40-man roster currently stands at 40 players.

Morgan, 28, went 3-0 with a 1.93 ERA (9 ER/42.0 IP) in 32 games in relief for Cleveland in 2024, holding the opponent scoreless in 25 of those outings. He held right-handed hitters to a .167 average against (14-for-84) during the campaign, tied for the 10th-lowest mark among A.L. relievers (min. 80 BF). The righthander threw 16.0-straight scoreless innings across 11 games from Aug. 28-Sept. 25. In nine career postseason appearances, he is 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA (2 ER/7.1 IP).

The five-foot 10-inch, 210-pound Morgan enjoyed a breakout season in 2022, finishing fourth among A.L. relievers with a 0.88 WHIP, going 5-3 with a 3.38 ERA (25 ER/66.2 IP) in 50 games (one start). In 2023, the righty set a career high with 61 appearances, finishing third on the Guardians with 67.1 innings in relief.

A native of Torrance, Calif., Morgan was selected by Cleveland in the eighth round in 2017 out of Gonzaga University (Wash.). All told, he has spent his entire eight-year professional career in the Cleveland organization, appearing in 161 major league games (19 starts) across four seasons since debuting in 2021, going 18-12 with a 3.97 ERA (117 ER/265.1 IP) and one save.

Rosario, 20, a sixth-round pick of the Cubs in 2023 out of the P27 Academy in Lexington, S.C., appeared in 109 games for Single-A Myrtle Beach in 2024, batting .230 (88-for-383) with 18 doubles, four triples, 16 home runs, 73 RBI and a .767 OPS.

Wisdom, 33, hit 84 home runs in 414 games across parts of five seasons with the Cubs. All told, in 454 career major league games, he is hitting .209 (274-for-1,311) with 58 doubles, three triples, 88 home runs, 207 RBI and a .750 OPS.
