Cubs recall pitcher, option Mark Leiter to Iowa |
MILWAUKEE – The Chicago Cubs today recalled left-handed pitcher Locke St. John from Triple-A Iowa and optioned right-handed pitcher Mark Leiter Jr. to Iowa.
St. John will wear uniform number 45 and is available for tonight’s 6:10 p.m. CT game against the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field. St. John, 29, looks to make his first big league appearance since August 21, 2019 vs. the Los Angeles Angels while with the Texas Rangers, a season in which he made his major league debut with seven relief appearances, no record and a 5.40 ERA (4 ER/6.2 IP). The six-foot three-inch St. John is 0-1 with a 5.14 ERA (4 ER/7.0 IP) in five relief appearances with Iowa, walking six and striking out eight. He signed a minor league contract with Chicago in November of last year then was selected to the 40-man roster and optioned back to Iowa on April 16. St. John last season was 4-0 with two saves and a 2.58 ERA (17 ER/59.1 IP) in 36 games (five starts) with Triple-A Toledo in Detroit’s system. He averaged 11.4 strikeouts per 9.0 innings with 75 strikeouts compared to 25 walks and limited the opponent to a .233 average and a .313 on-base percentage. Originally selected by Detroit in the 32nd round of the 2014 Draft out of the University of South Alabama, St. John is 27-34 with 11 saves and a 3.47 ERA (189 ER/490.1 IP) in 196 career minor league games (51 starts) with 184 walks and 472 strikeouts. Leiter Jr., 31, is 0-1 with a 7.84 ERA (9 ER/10.1 IP) in four games (three starts) for the Cubs this season.
