Former Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras will bat fifth and play DH tonight for the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field.
Contreras talked to the media in pregame and hopes that there will be at least 50 percent cheers/boos ratio for him when he steps up to the plate for the first time as a ex-Cub. “The welcome back is going to be 50-50. 50% is going to be happy, 50% is going to boo me,” he said. “I’m not mad about the fan base in Chicago, because I’m always going to be thankful for them. They always supported me from day one, and I’m always going to be thankful for them.” Contreras also said that he apologized to Cubs fans if he said anything that hurt their feelings this offseason after signing with the rival Cardinals. "Having support from them (Cubs fans) means a lot to me," Contreras said. "If there is something in the past that got in some people’s feelings, I really apologize. I would never say something against the Chicago Cubs or anything against the fan base.” Willson has recently been demoted to a DH role only by the struggling Cardinals (11-24). “I haven't heard one person telling me I won't be back behind the plate or we don't want you to catch anymore," he said. I don’t think that’s the case. We will keep communicating.
