CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today activated catcher Willson Contreras from the 10-day injured list and placed right-handed pitcher Keegan Thompson on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to September 3) with right shoulder inflammation.
Contreras, 29, landed on the 10-day injured list, August 12, with a right knee sprain. In three injury rehabilitation games with Triple-A Iowa, Contreras was 2-for-11 (.182) with two home runs, two RBI, three runs scored and a walk. The right-handed hitting Contreras is batting .226 (78-for-345) with 48 runs scored, 15 doubles, 17 home runs and 40 RBI in 104 games for Chicago this season. He leads the majors with five catcher pickoffs and is one of seven N.L. catchers to throw out at least 10 baserunners attempting to steal. In his sixth season with the Cubs since making his major league debut in 2016, Contreras owns a .258 career average (515-for-1,997) with 105 doubles, eight triples, 91 home runs, 293 RBI and a .348 on-base percentage in 597 games. He is a two-time N.L. All-Star, starting behind the plate in the 2018 and 2019 All-Star Games. Thompson, 26, is 3-3 with one save, a 3.54 ERA (19 ER/48.1 IP), 28 walks and 48 strikeouts in 30 games (four starts) for Chicago in his major league debut season.
