Roster Moves: Cubs trade for veteran catcher, pitcher DFA'ed |
CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today acquired catcher Matt Thaiss from the Los Angeles Angels for a cash consideration. In a corresponding move, right-handed pitcher Trey Wingenter has been designated for assignment. The Cubs 40-man roster currently stands at 40 players.
Thaiss, 29, appeared in 57 major league games with the Angels in 2024, batting .204 (32-for-157) with nine doubles, two home runs and 16 RBI. He set career marks in doubles (9), stolen bases (3) and on-base percentage (.323). On July 30 vs. Colorado, he recorded five RBI and two stolen bases, becoming the first player in Angels franchise history and the second catcher in major league history to accomplish the feat. A first round pick of the Angels in 2016 out of the University of Virginia, Thaiss has spent his entire career in the Angels organization. The left-handed hitter has played in 245 career major league games across parts of six seasons, batting .208 (138-for-663) with 23 doubles, 22 home runs and 79 RBI. Wingenter, 30, appeared in six games in relief for Chicago in 2024 after he was claimed off waivers from Boston Aug. 2, allowing two runs in 6.0 IP (3.00 ERA).
