Roster Move: Cubs select infielder Luis Vazquez from Triple-A Iowa

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today selected infielder Luis Vázquez from Triple-A Iowa.

Vázquez, 24, hit .271 (123-for-454) with 24 doubles, 20 home runs, 80 RBI and 54 walks to contribute to an .817 OPS in 124 games between Double-A Tennessee and Iowa. A right-handed hitter, he opened the season with the Smokies and was named Southern League Player of the Week for April 17-23. He hit .285 (66-for-232) with 13 doubles, 11 home runs, 40 RBI and an .823 OPS prior to his promotion to Iowa June 27. Vazquez last season played 114 games at shortstop with a .981 fielding percentage (8 E/415 TC) and saw time at second base (seven games) and third base (four games).

In six minor league seasons since 2017, the six-foot tall Vázquez has batted .236 (390-for-1,651) with 72 doubles, four triples, 36 home runs and 190 RBI in 465 games. He has primarily played shortstop (436 games) along with time at second base (17 games) and third base (12 games).

Vázquez was selected by the Cubs in the 14th round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft out of Alberto Meléndez Torres High School in Orocovis, Puerto Rico.

The 40-man roster stands at 37 players.
