Counsell reacts to Cubs pitcher breaking his hand punching a wall

The Chicago Cubs have had an underwhelming season to date. They are currently in last place and 11 games back in the National League Central division.

Things have been ugly, and one of the most embarrassing moments of the season happened recently when Cubs reliever Colten Brewer had a tough outing, proceeded to punch the Wrigley Field dugout wall, and broke his hand in the process.

The Cubs had to place him on the 60-day injured list with the fractured left hand (non-throwing hand).

“Emotions get the best of us at times,” Brewer said to the Athletic. “Letting my family down, and friends, teammates, the people of Wrigleyville, it’s just kind of heartbreaking to me right now.”

Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell knows that it is a bad look by Brewer but understands how emotions run high during baseball games.

“You hurt the team by doing it,” Counsell said. “It doesn’t reflect well on you. But you also put yourself in the shoes of this is an emotional game. Competition is emotional. And it happens. It’s something that you work hard to try to train yourself to not let it happen to you. But I think most of us have done something like that, (even if it) hasn’t resulted in that. (Myself) included.”

Counsell talked with Brewer and let him know that it was a bad mistake.

“When those things happen, you know you screwed up,” Counsell said. “That was the conversation. Then, there are consequences for the mistakes you make. It’s an unfortunate mistake. He let emotions get the best of him. It’s not who he is, but it’s a mistake that he made.”

Brewer had a 5.66 ERA with 22 strikeouts and a high 1.60 WHIP for the season.
