Yan joined Carlos Santana, ..ictor Martinez, Sandy Alomar and John Romano as only Indians catchers (at least 60% games at C) with 20+ HR, 60+ R and 70+ RBI in a season... After the season he earned his first career American League Silver Slugger Award, becoming the first catcher in club history to win the award outright (Victor Martinez shared the award in 2004). He led all A.L. catchers in average (.278), OPS (.785) and ex tra base hits (49) and was second in RBI (74) and 3rd in homers (21) among A.L. players who played in 80% of their games at catcher...He was 2nd among MLB catchers in OPS ... Among all A.L. qualifying batters he was 12th in slugging pct (.472), 19th in OPS (.785) and 9th in average vs. LHP (.331) ... Season OPS of .879 off LHP was 12th-highest in the AL. Got better as the season went along, hitting .294 (69-235) from July 1 thru the end of the season with 16 2B, 12 HR and 46 RBI in 65 games...In the second half he hit .303 (60-198) with 13 2B, 9 HR and 38 RBI in 55 games as his .847 OPS was 12th-highest among all American League batters with at least 200 second half p late appearances ... Defensively Yan picked up where he left off in 2013, making 121 starts at catcher (126 games) and also made 8 starts at DH and was a 2014 finalist for the Rawlings Gold Glove Award ... Tossed out 27 of 93 (29%) of the runners attemp ting to steal off him, the 2nd-highest pct. among American League catchers behind New York-AL's Brian McCann (31%)...Also made just 3 errors over his last 55 games of the season (July 18)...Set new club records for single-season p utouts (1052) and total chances (1139) for an Indians catcher as the Indians staff set a new MLB record for strikeouts (1450). Took a ball off the catcher's mask on August 21 at Minnesota (deflected off hit batter) and was p laced on the 7-day D.L. w/concussion symptoms from August 22-28...Returned after the 7 days on August 29 and from that p oint thru the end of the season he hit .257 (26-101) with 4 2B, 4 HR and 21 RBI in 26 games. Had a career-high 13-game hitting streak from July 24-August 7, the 3rd highest on the club in 2014...Enjoyed his first career 4-hit game on August 31 at K ansas City, going 4-for-5 with 2 runs scored .... Equaled single-game career-high with 4 RBI (2nd time) on Sep t 20 at Minnesota (3-4, HR)...Hit .333 (17-51) vs. Minnesota this year (4 2B, 6HR) and led all A.L. p layers with 19 RBI vs. the T wins in 2014...Hit .337 (29-86) in 21 starts batting 6th (3 2B, 4 HR, 18 RBI)...Hit .298 (62-208) with runners on base.
2013
Spent most of the season in Cleveland, posting an impressive season at and behind the plate for Terry Francona...Started the year at AAA Columbus, appearing in just six games total for the Clippers, and was with the Indians from April 9-24 and April 28 thru the remainder of the season...Overall made 79 starts (85 games) at catcher and 1 game at first base for Cleveland...Also made 1 start at DH...Indians pitchers recorded an ERA of 3.56 (710.0IP, 670H, 281ER) with Yan catching as he threw out an impressive 38.3% (18-47) of runners attempting to steal off him (would have led the AL with more appearances at catcher)...Indians were 49-30 (.620) when he started at catcher...Started 39 games at catcher in August and September (55 team games/22GS at C in 27 Sept team games)... Club recipient of the Wilson Defensive Player of the Year Award, which is determined by using a formula that balances scouting information, sabermetric analysis and basic fielding stats...Finished 2nd among Major League catchers with at least 275 plate appearances in slugging pct (.491) and 3rd in OPS (.837) and batting average (.298) as 31 of his 86 base hits went for extra bases....From June 28 thru the end of the season he hit .317 (59-186) with 14 doubles, 5 home runs and 20 RBI in 56 games...Enjoyed a career day on May 20 vs. Seattle (3-5, 2RS, 4RBI), connecting for a career-high 2 home runs and 4 RBI, including his first career "walk-off' home run in the 10th inning off Charlie Furbush...On the year he had 9 three-hit games and enjoyed a career-best 9-game hitting streak from Aug 29-Sept 10...Yan hit .309 (25-81) in 24 September games (6 2B, 2HR, 9RBI) and for the year hit .296 (37-125) with runners on base...Recorded an OPS of .934 off left-handed pitching...Scott Kazmir posted an ERA of 3.32 (130.0IP/48ER) in 23 starts with Yan catching.
2012
Split the season between Las Vegas and Toronto, his first taste of big league action in just his 4th professional season... Was recalled by Toronto from Las Vegas (AAA) on five separate occasions...Had a solid year at AAA Las Vegas as his batting average (.328), slugging pct (.557) and OPS (.938) all would have ranked in the top 10 in the Pacific Coast League had it not been for the five stints in the big leagues. Started the year in Las Vegas and was recalled for the first time on May 17, collecting his first hit that day vs. New York-AL off Phil Hughes...Homered the next day (May 18) for the first time off NY Mets' Jonathon Niese...Hit four home runs at the Major League level, with the 4th being a game-tying 2-out, 9th inning home run vs. Minnesota off closer Glen Perkins...Collected hits in four of his first five games (5-14) batting .357 over that stretch...After that collected hits in just 13 of his final 38 contests (15-84) while batting .179. Appeared in 79 games for Las Vegas batting .328 with an OPS of .938, including 29 2B, 13HR and 59 RBI...Split time at catcher, first base, third base, left field and designated hitter along both spots...Made 25 starts for Toronto in 2012 (5-C, 12-1B, 6-3B & 2-DH)....3 of his 4 HR came off LHP (had .457 slg pct off LHP at the big league level)...Was 7-for-19 (.368) after Sept 7 recall. At AAA he hit .344 (21-61) off LHP with 4HR, 12 RBI (1.026OPS) and in the first half he hit .346 (79-228) with 25 2B, 10HR & 44 RBI in 59 games (T5th in the PCL in first half batting avg)...Drove in 12 runs the last 8 games of the Triple-A season, hit .373 (56-150) with runners on base and .341 (31-91) for Las Vegas..Played for Team Brazil in WBC qualifier in November, leading the club to a 1-0 victory over Panama with the game's lone RBI to advance to the 16-team WBC field held in March... Also appeared in 17 games for Este in advance of the WBC qualifier.
2011
Spent the majority of the season at New Hampshire (AA) along with four games at Las Vegas (AAA)... POWER SOURCE: Combined to hit .248 with 19 doubles, three triples and 13 home runs in just 83 games... His .781 OPS with the Fisher Cats ranked 3rd on the club... C/1B: Appeared in 43 games behind the plate and 20 at first base, with the balance coming as the designated hitter... HOT AND COLD: In May and August combined to hit .328 (42-128)... In all other months batted .186 (33-177)... FALL BALL: Played in the Arizona Fall League, posting a .302 average with one home run and eight RBI.
2010
Combined to bat .270 between Lansing (Low-A) and Dunedin (High-A) with 33 extra base hits and a .780 OPS... Spent most of the season at Dunedin and posted a .373 average vs. left-handed pitching... Batted .342 in the second half, including a September average of .417 (10-24).
2009
Made his debut, spending the majority of the season with Auburn (Short Season-A)... Added his first proefssional home run on July 5.
