Craig Counsel reacts to Cubs cutting Yan Gomes

YAN GONE.

Veteran Cubs catcher Yan Gomes was DFA'ed before Wednesday's game to try to get an offensive boost out of the struggling catcher position.

Gomes hit only .154 in 34 games as the backup catcher, and Tomas Nido was signed to replace him on the roster.

“It was a tough decision,” Cubs manager Craig Counsell said about cutting Gomes. “Yan is a great teammate and an important person in the clubhouse. But in the end, we just felt like we had to make an attempt to try to get more production out of the catching spot. That’s what kind of instigated the move.”

Counsell was asked if it was 'shocking' about the lack of offensive production by Gomes.

“I don’t know if shocking would be the right word,” Counsell said. “I mean, that’s what happened, right? And we have to evaluate that. I think obviously, the level that it changed, it was significant, right? And so we just, again, we felt we had to try to make a move to just get more production out of that position.”

Gomes has 137 career homers and won a World Series title with the Nationals in 2019.
