Cubs sign catcher, Yan Gomes designated for assignment

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today signed catcher Tomás Nido and designated catcher Yan Gomes for assignment.

Nido, 30, joins the Cubs after playing for the Mets to start the season, where he was hitting .229 (19-for-83) with three home runs and eight RBI in 32 games. He was released by New York on Monday. Currently in his eighth major league season, Nido has played in 306 career games—all with the New York Mets—and owns a .214 batting average (178-for-830) with 16 home runs and 82 RBI.

In 2022, he was a finalist for the Gold Glove Award after appearing in a career-high 98 games, hitting .239, driving in a career-high 28 runs and committing just five errors. He made his major league debut against the Cubs at Wrigley Field on Sept. 13, 2017 and recorded his first big league hit at Wrigley Field the following day.

A native of Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, Nido was an eighth-round pick in the 2012 draft by the Mets out of Orangewood Christian School in Maitland, Fla.

Gomes, 36, appeared in 34 games this season, hitting .154 (7-for-34) with two home runs and seven RBI for the Cubs.

The Cubs host the San Francisco Giants today at 1:20 p.m. CT in a game that can be seen on Marquee Sports Network and heard on 670 the Score.
