Cubs place Patrick Wisdom on IL |
PITTSBURGH – The Chicago Cubs today placed infielder Patrick Wisdom on the injured list and selected infielder Trent Giambrone from Triple-A Iowa.
Giambrone, 27, will wear number 85 and is looking to make his major league debut during tonight’s 6:35 p.m. game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park. The five-foot eight-inch Giambrone has appeared in 493 career minor league games in the Cubs system after he was selected in the 25th round of the 2016 Draft from Delta State University in Cleveland, Miss. He has hit .240 (411-for-1,715) with 82 doubles, three triples, 59 home runs, 197 RBI and a .318 on-base percentage, while appearing defensively in 278 games at second base, 84 at shortstop, 47 at third base, 31 at left field, 30 at first base and 22 at right field. The right-handed hitter has batted .174 (41-for-235) with eight doubles, one triple, three home runs and 16 RBI in 72 games with Iowa this season after spending 2020 at the team’s South Bend Alternate Site. In 2019, Giambrone’s first season at the Triple-A level, he hit .241 (104-for-431) with 27 doubles, a career-high 23 homers and 66 RBI in 126 games to become the first I-Cub with 20 doubles and 20 homers in a season since Javier Báez in 2014. Wisdom, 30, has hit .231 (78-for-338) with 13 doubles, 28 home runs and 61 RBI in 106 games for the Cubs this season. His 28 home runs are a single-season franchise rookie record, surpassing the 26 Kris Bryant hit in 2015. Wisdom not going on the 10-day IL, just the IL. When there’s no injury given, it’s usually something dealing with COVID (either having it or being a close contact with someone who does). #Cubs haven’t stated if that’s the case yet. https://t.co/R4EmLxqB9g
