Roster Move: Cubs activate Jeimer Candelario from IL, option infielder Jared Young

by -

ATLANTA – The Chicago Cubs today activated infielder Jeimer Candelario from the 10-day injured list and optioned infielder Jared Young to the Arizona Complex League.

Candelario, 29, landed on the injured list September 12 with a low back strain. Prior to the injury, the switch-hitting infielder batted .237 (28-for-118) with eight doubles, one triple, five home runs and 16 RBI in 36 games with the Cubs after he was acquired by the club from Washington July 31 for left-handed pitcher DJ Herz and infielder Kevin Made. In 135 games this season with Washington (99 games) and Chicago (36 games), Candelario is batting .253 (123-for-486) with 38 doubles, three triples, 21 home runs, 69 RBI and an .811 OPS.

Candelario is in his second stint with the Cubs organization after he was signed by Chicago as a non-drafted free agent in October of 2010, making his major league debut in five games with the club in 2016. He was traded to Detroit with infielder Isaac Paredes in a deal for catcher Alex Avila and pitcher Justin Wilson at the 2017 trade deadline.

In 741 career major league games with Chicago (2016-17, 2023), Detroit (2017-22) and Washington (2023), Candelario is hitting .243 (648-for-2,669) with 164 doubles, 16 triples, 87 home runs and 317 RBI.

Young, 28, is batting .205 (8-for-39) with three triples, two home runs and eight RBI in 15 games with the Cubs this season.
