Cubs outright Edwin Rios to clear roster spot

Tony Crumpton Tony Crumpton - Senior Editor -

The Chicago Cubs have outrighted veteran infielder Edwin Rios to Triple-A Iowa on Sunday.

This move will now put the Cubs' 40-man roster to 39 spots, possibly clearing room for the Northsiders to add a player before the 2023 trade deadline.

It should be interesting to see what moves the Cubs make as they push for a possible wild-card or playoff berth.

Rios was batting .258 in 145 plate appearances for the I-Cubs season.

The 29-year-old signed a minor league deal with the Cubs this past offseason and had promise as he made the Opening Day roster.

He was a sixth-round pick by the Dodgers in the 2015 MLB draft.
