Cubs make several roster moves |
SAN DIEGO – The Chicago Cubs today placed right-handed pitcher Adbert Alzolay on the 10-day injured list with a blister on his right middle finger and recalled right-handed pitcher Kohl Stewart from Triple-A Iowa. Additionally, the team activated right-handed pitcher Alec Mills from the 10-day injured list and optioned right-handed pitcher Cory Abbott to Iowa.
Mills, 29, landed on the 10-day injured list May 16 with a lower back strain. He made three injury rehab outings with Iowa, May 23-June 2, and posted a 1.80 ERA (2 ER/10.0 IP) in his final two starts including 6.0 shutout innings, June 2 at Omaha. Mills this season is 2-0 with a 5.96 ERA (15 ER/22.2 IP) and one save in 12 games (one start) for Chicago, walking eight and striking out 13. In all or part of four seasons with Chicago, Mills is 8-6 with a complete game no-hit shutout, two saves and a 4.21 ERA (65 ER/139.0 IP) in 39 games (18 starts). Stewart, 26, is 1-1 with a 3.12 ERA (3 ER/8.2 IP) in two starts with the Cubs, walking three and striking out seven. In four starts with Iowa this season, he is 1-2 with a 3.68 ERA (9 ER/22.0 IP) with a 0.95 WHIP, walking five and striking out 23. Alzolay, 26, is 4-5 with a 4.06 ERA (26 ER/57.2 IP) in 11 starts for Chicago this season. He has allowed 16 walks and struck out 62 batters, contributing to a 1.04 WHIP. Abbott, 25, has no record with a 2.70 ERA (1 ER/3.1 IP) in two relief appearances for Chicago, including his major league debut this past Saturday in San Francisco.
