Three Takeaways from Bears loss to Seahawks |
Just like that, the Chicago Bears' losing streak has reached 10 games, and they did so in an ugly fashion. It's no secret that the Chicago Bears have had issues scoring this season, but Thursday night was an all-new low for this team, as they were held to just over 200 yards of offense before falling 6-3.
The loss marks this team's 10th consecutive loss, tied for the second-longest losing streak in franchise history, as the team has given up on the season. That can't happen no matter how difficult things are going, and if the Bears want to get back on track and start to be taken seriously, they need a head coach who can keep these players accountable and a group of players who can't let adversity get in the way. This was the one game this season where you could make a case that there weren't many positives, across from Tory Taylor and his punting. The defense also stepped up massively, but they still gave up far too many yards early in the game before settling in. Outside of that, the 60+ thousand fans in attendance were treated to an ugly game as the Bears holiday weekend begins with a massive thud. Here are some takeaways from the game:
It has been 74 days since the Bears last win, as they haven't won a game since October. That is hard to believe when you look at how this team started as the Bears ripped off three straight wins earlier in the season to get to 4-2. At that moment, people were starting to talk playoffs with this team as they were set to enter the easiest part of their schedule, riding a wave of confidence and ready to bank in some much-needed wins. Then came the Washington game, where one play broke this team to the point where they haven't won a game since. Leading 15-12 with less than 10 seconds to go, Tyrique Stevenson was caught taunting Washington fans before the last play of the game. That was followed by the Jayden Daniels Hail Mary, in which Stevenson tipped the ball to Noah Brown in the endzone to give Washington the 18-15 win, and the rest is history for this team.
Through all the ups and downs Caleb Williams has gone through this season, there were a lot of ups, with one coming from an interception side of things as he entered Thursday sitting on five interceptions. It was a number he was stuck for eight weeks as he last threw an interception the week before the Washington game. In the games since his last interception, Williams has set a team record for most passes without an interception and an NFL rookie record as he continued to show why he was worthy of a top-10 pick. Once his streak reached 300 consecutive passes, you started to wonder if he would throw another interception all season, as he refused to put the ball in harm's way more often than not. With the game on the line late in the fourth quarter, Williams took his shot, ending a long streak that saw him pass 352 times without an interception. Not only is that the longest by a rookie, but it is also the fourth longest in NFL history, which Williams can use as a confidence booster heading into next season.
Whenever nine points are scored in a game, it is cause for concern, especially when there are 13 punts between the two sides. The fans were far too accustomed to this lackluster offensive performance early in the season, but things were looking up after appointing Thomas Brown as OC in favor of Shane Waldron. Then came another promotion for Brown, as he took over for Matt Eberflus as head coach, thus appointing receiver coach Chris Beaty as the offensive coordinator. Brown is still calling the plays, but he has been getting input from Beaty, and the overall results aren't working. To show how bad things were last night, it was the first time in 25 when the Bears and their opponents combined for nine points in a game, with the last time coming against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Tampa during the 1999 season.74 days and counting
