DETROIT – The Chicago Cubs today activated right-handed pitchers Jake Arrieta and Dan Winkler, and infielder Nico Hoerner, from the 10-day injured list and optioned right-handed pitcher Jason Adam, left-handed pitcher Brad Wieck and outfielder Nick Martini to Triple-A Iowa.

Arrieta, Hoerner and Winkler are available for tonight’s 6:10 p.m. CT game against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park.

Arrieta, 35, was placed on the 10-day injured list on May 4 with a right thumb abrasion (retroactive to May 3). He is 3-3 with a 4.31 ERA (15 ER/31.1 IP) in six starts for the Cubs this season. He has walked 12, struck out 28 and allowed three of fewer runs in each of his first five outings.

Arrieta returned to Chicago after signing a one-year major league contract with a mutual option for 2022 on February 17 of this year. The six-foot four-inch Arrieta was 4-4 with a 5.08 ERA (25 ER/44.1 IP) in nine starts for the Phillies last season, including a 3.00 ERA (6 ER/18.0 IP) in his final three outings, walking six and striking out 14 in that span. This after pitching for the Cubs from 2013-17 and going 68-31 with six complete games, five shutouts, two no-hitters and a 2.73 ERA (244 ER/803.0 IP) in 128 starts while also earning the 2015 N.L. Cy Young Award and being named a 2016 N.L. All-Star.

Hoerner, 24, was placed on the 10-day injured list on May 4 with a left forearm strain. He has batted .389 (14-for-36) with six doubles and seven RBI in 11 games for Chicago this season, walking eight times compared to seven strikeouts.

Originally selected by Chicago in the first round (24th overall) of the 2018 draft out of Stanford University, Hoerner was the first member of the 2018 MLB draft class to make his major league debut when he was promoted from Double-A Tennessee, September 9, 2019. He collected 20 RBI in his first 24 career games, becoming just the fourth Cub to do so (joined Mandy Brooks in 1925, Joe Kelly in 1926 and Jorge Soler in 2014).

Winkler, 31, landed on the 10-day injured list on May 4 (retroactive to May 3) with right triceps tendinitis. In his second season with Chicago, Winkler is 1-0 with two holds and a 0.84 ERA (1 ER/10.2 IP), walking seven, striking out 12 and stranding all eight runners inherited.

Winkler is 9-2 with two saves, 36 holds and a 3.34 ERA (48 ER/129.1 IP) in 148 career relief appearances between the Braves (2015-19) and Cubs (2020-21), walking 57 and striking out 145. Since joining Chicago prior to the 2000 campaign, Winkler is 1-0 with three holds and a 2.17 ERA (7 ER/29.0 IP) in 31 relief appearances. He has held the opponent to a .162 average and a .575 OPS since joining Chicago.

Martini, 30, has appeared in five games with the Cubs. He batted .200 (1-for-5) with two strikeouts in five plate appearances.

Adam, 29, has no record and an 8.22 ERA (7 ER/7.2 IP) in nine outings for Chicago this season, walking six and striking out 13.

Wieck, 29, has appeared in two games for Chicago, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings while walking one and striking out three.
