Cubs trading pitcher Cory Abbott to Giants |
The Chicago Cubs are trading pitcher Cory Abbott to the San Francisco Giants for cash considerations.
The Giants had to DFA outfielder Jaylin Davis to make room for Abbott on their 40-man roster. Abbott had been designated for assignment recently, so it was a solid move to trade him to get something in return. For the Giants, it was a good move to throw some cash to get a 26-year-old pitcher that has a few options left. Giants manager Gabe Kapler told the media tonight that Abbott “might be a nice pitcher for us with a couple of adjustments and tweaks." Abbott has been sent to Triple-A Sacramento. The Cubs drafted Abbott in the second round of the 2017 draft. In 2021, he had a 6.75 ERA in 17 1/3 innings with the Cubs. In 96 Triple-A innings last season, he had a 5.91 ERA with a 29.8 percent strikeout rate. A change of scenery can sometimes really help a prospect so we shall see if the Giants got a diamond in the rough eventually.
