Bears News: Anthony Rizzo gives his take on Joe Maddon's job status

by - Senior Writer -

CHICAGO — Chicago Cubs beat writer Bruce Levine of 670 The Score recently chatted with Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo about Cubs manager Joe Maddon's job status. Levine's article details that conversation, in which Rizzo offered his support for Maddon, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the season.

"I feel like I shouldn't have to answer that question," Rizzo responded when asked whether or not he expected Maddon to remain the Cubs' manager following the 2019 slate. "Go look at his resume. If you don't believe it has been because of things he does, you can look at everything he has done from the time he got here and completing our whole rebuild."

Maddon has managed the Cubs since 2015 and was at the helm when the Cubs won the World Series in 2016, and neither he nor Cubs management opted to discuss a contract extension last offseason. Therefore, Maddon will be a managing free agent this fall, but Rizzo thinks that Maddon's player-friendly approach and history of success should make it an easy decision for the Cubs' front office to bring Maddon back.

"With every 25-man roster, not everyone is going to agree with the manager all of the time," Rizzo said while discussing Maddon. "But he has empowered us to be in charge as well. We have a simple theory to keep it about going out and playing baseball each day."
