CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today announced the new Chicago Cubs Hall of Fame Class of 2022 featuring Hall of Famer Buck O’Neil, Cubs radio play-by-play announcer Pat Hughes and former outfielder José Cardenal. Their Hall of Fame plaques are scheduled to be unveiled in the Left Field Budweiser Bleacher concourse at Wrigley Field Saturday, September 10.

Cubs historian Ed Hartig helped identify the candidates for consideration which included:

Individuals who played for the Cubs five or more years.

Individuals who made a significant contribution to the Cubs organization.

Pre-1950s Cubs players that finished in the organization’s top 10 within their era in at least one major statistical category.

Players who finished their Cubs career by the 2000 season that were in the organization’s top 10 within their era in at least one major statistical category.

The new Class of 2022 was selected by the Hall of Fame Voting Committee which is comprised of five Cubs Hall of Famers including Andre Dawson, Fergie Jenkins, Ryne Sandberg, Lee Smith and Billy Williams, as well as eight members of the media. The members of the media include David Haugh, Peggy Kusinski, Bruce Levine, Bruce Miles, Fred Mitchell, Carrie Muskat, Dan Roan and Barry Rozner.

Voting was based on, but not limited to, the candidate’s record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character and contributions to the Cubs organization. The top two candidates to receive the most votes from the Hall of Fame Voting Committee, or greater than 75% of the votes, were elected to the Chicago Cubs Hall of Fame. O’Neil received a direct induction as a result of his election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2022.

“We’re thrilled to add Buck, Pat and José to the Chicago Cubs Hall of Fame,” said Cubs President of Business Operations Crane Kenney. “Their contributions to the game of baseball and the Cubs organization are deserving of such recognition within the walls of Wrigley Field. We look forward to adding more plaques to the Hall of Fame in the coming years.”

The Chicago Cubs Hall of Fame was installed in Wrigley Field last summer and currently includes 56 plaques which represent individuals previously enshrined in the original Cubs Hall of Fame (1982-86), those enshrined in the Cubs Walk of Fame (1992-98), Cubs in the National Baseball Hall of Fame and the 2021 inductee, Margaret Donahue.
