Roster Moves: Cubs select pitcher from Triple-A Iowa, option David Bote

by -

ST. LOUIS – The Chicago Cubs today announced that left-handed pitcher Sean Newcomb has been selected from Triple-A Iowa and optioned infielder David Bote to Triple-A Iowa.

Newcomb is scheduled to start game two of today’s doubleheader in St. Louis at 6:45 p.m. CT.

Newcomb, 29, has made four outings out of the bullpen for the Cubs this season, allowing eight runs in 4.1 IP with two walks and four strikeouts. The lefthander spent time on the 15-day injured list from May 11 (retroactive to May 8)-June 12 with a left ankle sprain, before being designated for assignment on June 13 and outrighted to Triple-A Iowa on June 20.

In 12 games (one start) with the I-Cubs, Newcomb is 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA (9 ER/24.0 IP) with 31 strikeouts, including a season-high, eight-strikeout performance in his lone start on July 28 at St. Paul. Newcomb was acquired by Chicago from Atlanta April 21 of this season for right-handed pitcher Jesse Chavez and a cash consideration.

The six-foot, five-inch Newcomb is 24-23 with 18 holds, two saves and a 4.39 ERA (189 ER/387.2 IP) in 148 major league games (57 starts) spanning six seasons with the Braves (2017-22) and the Cubs (2022). He has struck out 394 batters, good for an average of 9.1 strikeouts per 9.0 innings, with 206 walks allowed.

Selected by the Angels in the first round (15th overall) of the 2014 Draft out of the University of Hartford, Newcomb was acquired by Atlanta November 12, 2015, with infielder Erick Aybar, right-handed pitcher Chris Ellis and cash for infielder Andrelton Simmons and catcher Jose Briceno.

Bote, 29, is hitting .259 (14-for-54) with three doubles, one home run and three RBI in 21 games for the Cubs this season, after missing from April 7-June 24 while recovering from left shoulder surgery.
