The Chicago Bears are on an eight-game losing streak and have lost their last two games by a combined 43 points. That is why it is no surprise that the Bears are again favored to lose when they face the Detroit Lions this coming Sunday (Noon / FOX).
According to DraftKings, Chicago is a 6.5-point underdog with an over / under of 48 points. This is going to be a high-scoring affair. Chicago has been allowing a lot of points, giving up 68 points over the last two weeks, while Detroit has scored 76 points in that span. The Lions will undoubtedly score points in this game, whether the Bears do or not. Therefore, the over will hit in this game. While the Lions have scored 76 points in the last two weeks, they have given up 79 points. That is another reason this could be high-scoring, but also shows that Chicago has the chance to put up points in this game. However, they have not been competitive since firing former head coach Matt Eberflus. The defense has been worse, and the offense took a major step back, potentially because the locker room has given up on this season. That is not a recipe for covering the spread. Therefore, Chicago will not cover the 6.5-point spread. One person who has not given up on this season is rookie quarterback Caleb Williams. He performs every week and put up 256 passing yards against the Detroit Lions when he faced them for the first time on Thanksgiving. However, Williams has not surpassed 200 passing yards since. With the amount of passing yards the Detroit Lions have given up this season, Williams will have the chance to make some plays this season. Therefore, he will throw for at least 225 passing yards in this contest. Having an eight-game losing streak usually leads to a lot of negative statistics. However, Williams has a few positive numbers to show. For example, he has thrown at least one touchdown in the past four games. When he faced Detroit on Thanksgiving, he threw for three touchdowns. Given how many points Detroit has given up recently, it also seems like Williams will have the opportunity to throw some touchdowns. Thus, he will have at least two passing touchdowns this coming Sunday. Back on Thanksgiving, wide receiver D.J. Moore put up 97 receiving yards and a touchdown. Williams targeted him 16 times, and with Thomas Brown as the offensive play-caller, there has been more of a concerted effort to get the ball in Moore’s hands. That will have to be part of the game plan again this Sunday against the Lions. Thus, Moore will have at least 70 receiving yards. There are a lot of mysteries with what is going on with the Chicago Bears this season. One of them has been the mystery of why tight end Cole Kmet is not getting targets. He leads the Bears in catch percentage among players with at least five receptions. However, Kmet has only been targeted four times in the last three games. Twice this season, he has not been targeted for the entire game. Head coach Thomas Brown will realize he needs to get the ball to Kmet. Therefore, Kmet will have at least 25 receiving yards in this game.
