Bears reportedly looking at two elite pass rushers

by - Senior Writer -

The Chicago Bears' bye week has come at the perfect time this season as they have several key players nursing injuries. This is the rare case when going to London works in your favor, as most teams tend to take the next week off to recover from the long travel days. With so many injuries on their roster, this week off will give these guys some extra time to heal, and hopefully, they will be good to go by week 8.

Although the Bears may not be taking the field this week, they will continue watching a lot of football as the NFL trade deadline is rapidly approaching. With several big names already coming off the board in the form of Davante Adams and Amari Cooper, not only has the deadline got off to a fast start, but an early one as well, as this could be one of the more entertaining trade deadlines in recent memory.

With a record of 4-2 and a winnable schedule coming up, the Bears are in a position to make the playoffs. There is no reason for the Bears to sit on their hands and do nothing. You can bet that the Minnesota Vikings, Detroit Lions, and Green Bay Packers will all do something to better their chances, so unless the Bears want to be left behind, they need to look at a move, too.

You saw what Ryan Poles is capable of last season when he came out of nowhere to grab Montez Sweat and then signed him to a massive extension. Poles is one of those guys for whom you need to expect the unexpected as he continues to shock Chicago with some of his moves.

Looking at the current status of the Chicago Bears roster, there are two pressing needs that could be addressed at the deadline. One of those needs is the offensive line, as the Bears have improved but still aren't consistent enough. The other position they could address is the defense, as they would still like to add another pass rusher to pair with Sweat.

It does seem like that is their plan of attack right now, as Sports Illustrated reports that the Bears have their eyes on two big-name players: Myles Garrett and Maxx Crosby.

Both players resumes speak for themselves, but it would take a whole lot to bring either of these guys in. For the sake of conversation, should the Bears grab one of these two men and pair them with Sweat, can you imagine their defense?

With the Browns sitting at 1-5 and just shipping Cooper to Buffalo, it does appear that Cleveland is in business. If there was ever a time to trade Garrett, now would be the time. The same can be said about the Raiders, who are not only 2-4 but just sent their best player, Adams, to the Jets, so it appears both teams could be open for business if the price is right.

Both players are the definition of a bonafide superstar, and both would instantly make this Bears defense the top defense in the league for years to come. Garrett is one of those players where the production speaks for itself, as the former No.1 overall pick from Texas A&M has logged 92.5 sacks across his career and six double-digit sack seasons.

Depending on what happens with him the rest of this season, there is a chance he could reach 100 career sacks this year, as he has been about as productive as they come. Crosby may not have the same production as Garrett yet, but he is no slouch and is arguably a better all-around player than Garrett.

Not only does Crosby get in there to stop the run, but with 5.5 sacks through six games, he is ranked fifth in the league and is well on his way to a double-digit sack season. Chicago has been near the bottom of the league in sacks the past few seasons, but they have been trending up since adding Sweat to their defense.

That includes their 18 sacks this season, which put them fifth in the league. They are finally starting to put more consistent pressure on quarterbacks across the board. This is one of those moves that would put their defense over the top, showing everyone that the Bears not only do business for this season but plan to win and contend for the foreseeable future.
