Bears reportedly release veteran tight end

by - Senior Editor -

The Chicago Bears are tired of waiting for tight end Trey Burton to get healthy as he was released Friday.

Burton had offseason hip surgery and was expected to be ready for Bears training camp.

The Bears will owe him $4 million, but whatever amount the next team signs him for will be subtracted from what the Bears will owe. He had two years remaining on the four-year, $32 million deal that he signed in March 2018.

The move could free up to $2.8 million off the Bears salary cap.

In two seasons with the Bears, he caught 68 passes for 653 yards and six touchdowns over 24 games. Last season, he had only 14 catches for 84 yards as he was hampered by a groin injury.

In 2018, he had 54 catches for 569 yards and six touchdowns.

Look for the Bears to get another tight end to replace him in the upcoming 2020 NFL Draft.
