CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today recalled right-handed pitcher Adbert Alzolay from the club’s South Bend Alternate Site. Right-handed pitcher Colin Rea was optioned to South Bend after last night’s game.

Alzolay will make the start for the Cubs tonight when they conclude their three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds at Wrigley Field.

In addition, outfielder Steven Souza Jr., who was designated for assignment on September 5, cleared waivers and has been granted his release.

Left-handed pitcher Matt Dermody has cleared waivers and been assigned outright to South Bend, while right-handed pitcher Joe Wieland has been added to the 60-Man Player Pool and assigned to South Bend. Right-handed pitcher Juan Gamez and outfielder Ryan LaMarre have been granted their release.

Minor league infielder Pedro Martinez has been traded to the Tampa Bay Rays as a player to be named from the club’s acquisition of INF/OF José Martínez.

Alzolay, 25, has made three appearances, two starts, for the Cubs this season and has gone 0-1 with a 2.08 ERA (2 ER/8.2 IP). He made his major league debut last season and went 1-1 with a 7.30 ERA (10 ER/12.1 IP) in four appearances (two starts) with the Cubs. He went 2-4 with a 4.41 ERA (32 ER/65.1 IP) in 15 starts with Iowa last season, recording 91 strikeouts in 65.1 innings pitched while limiting foes to a .215 batting average.

The righthander was originally signed by the Cubs at the age of 18 as a non-drafted free agent in 2012. A native of Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela, Alzolay has gone 33-27 with a 1.16 WHIP and 3.63 ERA (198 ER/491.0 IP) in 105 appearances, 84 as a starter, covering seven seasons in the Cubs minor league system.

Rea, 30, has gone 1-1 with a 5.79 ERA (9 ER/14.0 IP) in nine appearances, two starts, with the Cubs this season.

Chicago’s 60-man Player Pool roster stands at 59 players, with 28 active players on the major league roster (plus three 10-day injured list players) and 28 players in South Bend.
