Cubs catcher likely to miss time with broken hand

This is not great news.

Chicago Cubs catcher Victor Caratini is likely out a minimum of 3-4 weeks with a possible broken left hand. He suffered the injury during a swing during his last at-bat during Thursday night's 2-0 win against the Pirates.

Caratini had an x-ray on it and the team fears that it is a hamate fracture according to multiple reports. They will perform a CT scan Friday to find out more information.

Caratini spoke to reporters after the injury after the game.

"It's not easy and definitely frustrating especially how I started out the season the way I was hoping to and unfortunately there are things that I can't control but hopefully, I will able to bounce back."

Caratini knew something was wrong as he tried to play through it.

"I felt it crack. But I felt hot, so I kept going," he said. "Once I got to second base and took off my batting glove, I could tell there was something wrong. I'll know more [Friday] when I meet with the doctor, but the trainers think maybe three or four weeks."

He was raking for the Cubs during the early portion of the season hitting .571 (8-for-14) with a homer, 3 walks, and five RBIs. He had two doubles and an RBI in the win last night.

During the last three seasons in the majors with the Cubs, he has hit .251 (63-for-251) with 11 doubles, four homers, and 27 RBI in 112 games.

The Cubs will likely call up catcher Taylor Davis from Triple-A Iowa on Friday. He is the only backup catcher on the Cubs' 40 man roster and has some experience playing 13 games for the North Siders the last two seasons.
